Grain marketing workshop set for Jan. 27. Lena — Crop producers have many challenges to overcome in their quest for profitability in 2017. “One way to eliminate some of the guesswork in the search for profit is to use marketing tools to pre-price some portion of your crop,” said UWExtension Agriculture Agent Scott Reuss. “Additionally, producers holding unpriced grain in storage can utilize trends and risk management tools to minimize the risk that they carry forward.” Oconto and Marinette County UW Extension offices are sponsoring an event to help grain producers better understand marketing opportunities and how to utilize those opportunities to their operations’ advantage during a special workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27. The registration fee of $10 includes materials, lunch, and snacks. Pre-registration is requested, to ensure that enough materials will be available for all participants. UW-Extension Agriculture Agent Scott Reuss will be leading participants through a discussion of the various tools and techniques which they may choose to utilize in their marketing efforts, as well as sample exercises and analyzing pricing opportunities for the upcoming crop harvest or for grain currently in storage. A key component of the discussion will be producer experiences of the difficulties and advantages of differing marketing practices. The day will start with a review of anticipated 2017 cost of production to set the table for an estimate of per bushel production costs.
